Boarding Krakow to Frankfurt

All done! Almost.

We had an experience here in Poland that is hard to describe through a blog. Long prayer walks, exciting outreach gatherings, and intimate time with the Otrembas soaked up our physical, spiritual, and emotional energy this past week- and we loved every second of it.

The last day and a half we spent in Krakow where we were able to decompress and debrief before jumping back into the routine of life. Our personal prayers these last couple days have been that we would not simply return home. But that we would return home with a devoted commitment to living on mission. And not "our mission" but God's mission.

When we weren't debriefing the week, we were experiencing the beautiful city of Krakow. Below are some pictures for your enjoyment. Wish you could have been there with us!!

God's Grace

Our time here has been a Blessing. Saturday, the 26th of July, was a very special day for me. I turned 50. Yes, the big 5-0. Pretty amazing! As you have been reading in our blog, God has been faithful and we have been able to help and pray each day in this community. Each of us have been sharing our “Stories” and I was able to share mine on the first day I was here. Some of you may know my story, but I will tell my short version here since it all started before I was born. When my Mom was 4 months pregnant with me, her blood started to react against mine. It kept getting worse and the Doctor told my parents I could be born dead at anytime. Along with many prayers by others, my parents dedicated me to the Lord at that time for him to heal me or take me to heaven with him. God was gracious and I was born healthy!

When I accepted the Lord as my Savior, when I was 11, I also realized God had allowed me to be born for a reason. There have been times when it is obvious and other times when it is not. But the Lord is always by my side. God is always faithful and hears our prayers, even when it “feels” he is far away. I am very thankful for seeing God’s hand at work on this trip and I have been enjoying getting to know both our team and the Polish people.

-Beth

We partied too hard!

I started writing this on Saturday night and fall asleep halfway through. My apologies!

---

Wow I'm tired. It's midnight here and we only just recently got back from the party we helped host. One of the Otremba's good friends, Derek and Gabriella, invited about 100 people to their home for a party. The party didn't have any special reason except to eat food.

And we ate food.

About half of the people showed up that he invited so for a large portion of the day we had a lot of people to meet and greet- all through a decent language barrier.

I've found, through the many different cultures I've experienced, that soccer is the international language. So I saw a kid with a soccer ball and started a game!

As more people showed up to the party, we all dispersed into our natural "roles."

Tracy was a manager of a restaurant in a past life so she got the ladies motivated and prepared in the kitchen. Tracy, we found, is also the most talented communicator across the language barrier. She's going to post about her tactics later.

After everyone had been mingling for awhile, Tomek rounded people up to thank Derek and Gabriella, our team, and to have the opportunity to share some personal stories (code word for testimonies).

Since us Americans were kind of the attraction, Tomek asked me to share first. I shared a recent life story that I was able to compare to the Gospel. I'll tell you more in depth about what I shared in a later post since it requires a cultural back drop.

Then Tomek's son Kristian shared as well as Derek and Tomek. It was encouraging to see all 30+ adults totally attentive for all 30+ minutes of our stories.

After our story time, Derek's brother organized a big battmitton tournament. All ages were able to get involved and have a fun time together. He put us in teams of 3, so we gathered our "best chance at winning." We won 2 games out of 9... But they were two glorious games! ;)

The night grew tired and so did the guests. A slow exit started and we took that as the cue to start cleaning up. All in all it was a fabulous day!

Oh and we celebrated a 50th birthday, too :)

A packed couple days...

The days are flying by now. We began Thursday with our Bible study and then stopped at the Otremba’s house to praise God in song and prepare for the day. Then our prayer walk took us to the Silesia University with special focus on the art department where Damaris is working on her Master’s degree.

We had lunch just off the town square at the Bistro side of the same building where we had our first dinner. Pizza!

In the afternoon we had a chance to do a little bit of manual labor. A few of us dropped in on a neighbor to the Otremba’s with gardening gloves and tools in hand. We were allowed to weed at first. Within twenty minutes we felt warmly welcomed as the homeowner shared her priorities for trimming and clipping vines and we had some time to sweat a bit.

We were sent home with apples from this beautiful garden, which is typical of the area. Every inch is filled with flowers, herbs, and fruits, like raspberries, strawberries and apples.

Meanwhile, Beth and Nicole were unpacking books in Tomek’s office, a job he was hesitant to share, but finally agreed that it was something he could not find time for. Tracy focused on updating the data-base for future communication.

Thursday evening took us in four different directions. If the blog has been quiet for a day it is because we have been using our free moments to share among ourselves the blessings of Thursday evening. Our paths took us into family homes, and walks through the town with dinner on the square. Each family had no more than two people from our team as guests and it gave us all a wonderful time to tell our stories, and to listen and learn with Christians in Poland

Kudos to Tracy. She used charades and pictures to communicate successfully into the night. The rest of us had the pleasure of communicating with hosts in English.

I am sure there will be pictures inserted of some of the food. There are some serious foodies on the team. So far, everything has been delicious. The presentation is never wasted as it is memorialized with photography.

Friday morning we gathered again in the dining room of Hotel Liburnia. The breakfast buffet had been getting a bit sparse the last couple of days. But there were busloads of people that arrived last night and the buffet was plentiful again. We each selected one of the Psalms for our study.

Tomek and Jacek took us to Jacek and Kasia’s house for our daily walk. We divided into two groups to walk through the neighborhood and pray. Tracy and Clancy stayed with the children during our walk so Jacek and Kasia could each lead a group. There were many buildings and flats that date back to a time of communism. The people we passed did not seem to notice us.

The Jehovah’s witnesses populate a lot of this neighborhood and make it difficult for Rymosz’s to share with the families.

We also had the pleasure to see the possible future site for the Otremba’s ministry. If God provides the means, the family hopes to buy and build a home and ministry center within a 10-minute walk from the Rymosz’s home.

After our walk we had lunch at what is now one of our favorite Polish restaurants specializing in pierogies. Jake will share about our food adventures soon!

After lunch we returned to the Otremba’s, using a taxi for part of the team. The distances to be traveled have not been far and taxi service has been readily available.

The Friday afternoon activities are in full swing now. There are teenage boys playing in the yard, more unpacking of books going on, shopping for the men’s gathering (grill food) tonight, as well as kitchen prep for this evening. I (Mary) am needed in the kitchen now-so signing off.

Girls just want to have fun

On Tuesday after lunch, the women split into two groups as we prepared for a women’s craft time at Kasia’s house.  Tracy and Mary went to the grocery store with Damaris to prepare the food for the party.  Beth, Clancy and myself (Nicole) went to Kasia’s where we began to work with the women creating candleholders from old jars.

Kasia invited two of her childhood friends who do not know Jesus.  Beth and Tracy had the opportunity to share their life stories with the women over dinner.  As a result of the festivities both of Kasia’s friends are open to attending more women’s groups in the future.  Kasia and Damaris are excited for the possibility to continue building relationships with these women.  Damaris’s daughter also took the time to teach us some Polish phrases like, I love ice cream!

On Wednesday after lunch, Damaris hosted for a women’s craft night.  This time the crowd was from the local elementary school (where her children attend school).  There were more than 6 women and more than 10 children.  Clancy and myself (Nicole) shared our stories of Jesus’s love with the women.  We ate some yummy food, prepared and joined in fellowship with one another.  Mary and Clancy spent time with the children creating flower crafts, coloring and watching the Polish version of Frozen.  (Make sure you ask them to sing it for you…in Polish!)

Hope in the Flowers

What a fantastic day! It feels like we had a week packed into one day.

Every day we start out together as a team spending time reading and studying the Bible. This morning we dug into Philippians. We clung to Philippians 4:6-7 during our prayer time around the Otremba's neighborhood.

It was great to see where they live and pray over their street, their kids' school, and the important buildings in the area.

One building was a huge apartment complex that over looked a good portion of Cieszyn. It holds hundreds of people and has the communist-era feel about it.

The view from up top was spectacular and really gave us a feel for the make up of the city the Otremba's have grown to love.

The apartments showed the heart of the Pols in the flowers that spewed out of almost every apartment. It's a sign of the beautiful things that Polish people relish.

Only half our day was spent there, praying over that part of the city. The other half was spent at the Otremba's, preparing for about 15 women to come over.

The Otremba's and the ladies on our team hosted a craft party for Damaris' friends and acquaintances. They had such a fun time!

Please pray for the language barrier. It often times poses an opportunity for frustration on both sides due to a great desire to communicate. Please pray that Tomek and Damaris would have continued energy to translate and continue hosting our team. Also please pray that our team would have a rejuvenation since we're about halfway. We all got very tired today!

Our first "official" day

Tuesday, July 22, was technically our first full day in Cieszyn. And all we can say is, wow!

The day started off with a great night's rest for most of us and a breakfast almost worth writing home about. Then Tomek and Damaris picked us up and took us downtown to the town center.

The Catholic Church kicked off our prayer walk. What an amazing display of art and culture! It also broke my heart to see how so many other things are highlighted over Jesus. That was the theme of most of our prayers: that Jesus would become the focal point of the Polish people's faith (can you join us in praying for that?).

Our team split off into three groups from the town center. My team walked to a couple different churches and prayed over them. Above is the Franciscan church.

We all met back up and debriefed at Cieszyn's oldest building, The ???. It's over 1,000 years old! The Otremba's have connections so we were even able to sit inside.

Afterwards, we ate lunch (which Jake will tell you about later) and the girls set off to prepare and host a ladies time at one of Damaris' friend's house (which Nicole will tell you about soon).

Oh, we also got to re-enter Poland. The town of Cieszyn is actually split by the Poland-Czech Republic border. It's an open border, so we took advantage of it!

That's all for now :)

Running on Fumes

We landed. Safely, soundly, and sleepily. Tomek picked us up at the airport and ushered us into a cozy van. The team's excited buzz quickly turned into a calm purr.

After a two hour ride, we made it to our hotel in Cieszyn where Damaris, Tomek's wife, was there to meet us. She helped us get checked in before we all met up for a quick lunch. Our slightly delirious sleep-deprived minds helped bring out the best in us.

Once we finished lunch, everyone stole away to freshen up and catch a nap. We met back up at 4:30 to head over to the Otremba's house.

Our time with them was so wonderful. Their 9 year old daughter had prepared some snacks for us so we indulged in those while getting the week's plan from Tomek and Damaris. It sounds like it will be an action packed week!

Our night ended with a viewing of a 3D video of the history of Cieszyn followed by a nice meal. We all dressed up and had a wonderful time meeting one of the Otremba's closest friends, the .

After the long meal, we walked around the historic town square to take in the sights and pray for our week. We are so grateful for the safe travels and the comfort in knowing we are in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you!

And now it's time to sleep! Tomorrow will be our first official day.

Please pray that we will be open to how God will use us!

They see me rollin'

I'm sitting in the back of the church van, holding down the luggage (and my breakfast) while en route to Dulles. Our team of 7 is giddy with excitement for the flight that awaits us. We've spent the last 6 months thinking about, praying over, and preparing for this moment. It seems surreal!

I want to first welcome you. The 7 of us need the people like you to be actively interested in our mission. We desperately need prayer while we are gone and will be posting an update everyday. You are so essential to our mission that we honestly count you as part of the team. WITAMY! (That means welcome in Polish.)
